Despite comments by UFC President Dana White following UFC 97 that Jason MacDonald was unlikely to be cut following his April loss to Nate Quarry, the promotion has done just that, releasing the veteran middleweight over the weekend, according to

The bloody first-round TKO defeat to Quarry was “The Athlete’s” second-straight loss and fifth in his last eight bouts. He ends his current stint in the UFC with an even 5-5 record. MacDonald earned victories over Ed Herman, Chris Leben, Rory Singer, Joe Doerksen, and Jason Lambert and suffered losses to Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami, Demian Maia, Wilson Gouveia, and Quarry.

Though there has been no confirmation on where MacDonald may ultimately end up, his well-known name is likely to attract interest from Strikeforce and Affliction, while the Canadian is also likely to receive offers from a number of Canadian promotions.
