Jason MacDonald

Despite comments by UFC President Dana White following UFC 97 that Jason MacDonald was unlikely to be cut following his April loss to Nate Quarry, the promotion has done just that, releasing the veteran middleweight over the weekend, according to Sportsnet.ca.

The bloody first-round TKO defeat to Quarry was “The Athlete’s” second-straight loss and fifth in his last eight bouts. He ends his current stint in the UFC with an even 5-5 record. MacDonald earned victories over Ed Herman, Chris Leben, Rory Singer, Joe Doerksen, and Jason Lambert and suffered losses to Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami, Demian Maia, Wilson Gouveia, and Quarry.

Though there has been no confirmation on where MacDonald may ultimately end up, his well-known name is likely to attract interest from Strikeforce and Affliction, while the Canadian is also likely to receive offers from a number of Canadian promotions.

Hey atleast he leaves a kool ufc legacy as the one and only “TUF KILLER”

    • Justin says:

He beat TUF losers, Josh Neer and Clay Guida have both beaten TUF winners in back to back fights, and if Guida knocks off Sanchez next month he will be 3-0 against TUF winners, therefore taking that title IMO.

  • Dirty says:

I could be wrong but I don’t recall seeing Maia vs Macdonald on the 180 fights to choose from on Spike.com……….

Too bad about him being cut though, win or loose its always an exciting fight.

  • marvelknight4 says:

It sucks to see him go, man… he started strong, i still think he’s a good fighter though

  • Q says:

    Hey Dirty,

The fight was on the GSP and Fitch card and Maia and MacDonald really went at it (in a Jiu Jitsu war). I loved the fight and will miss him in the UFC

  • wellfire says:

knew it was coming, with all the cuts they’ve made over the year they won’t keep a guy who’s 5-5, he’ll land somewhere

  • Dirty says:

I agree Q, I think my post came off the wrong way . One of my favorite fights forsure but didn’t see it on the top 100 list on Spike.com….. Thought it would be there to choose from forsure….. maybe I browsed passed it ? who knows

  • bigchris2328 says:

dirty, its not on the list. I agree it was a good fight. sucks that the ufc cut him, look at the guys he lost to Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami, Demian Maia, Wilson Gouveia, and Quarry. 3 top contenders, 2 solid guys, and they cut him. cut kendall grove, diaz, jardine, there are numerous others that should be cut instead of macdonald. this is the ufc’s loss, he will end up in another organization and do damage there. bad move by the ufc in my eyes.

  • big_evil says:

I think he’s gonna go to strikeforce and fight lawler. all out brawl!

  • mike says:

he will get killed if he fights lawler, i want to see lawler fight cung lee or nick diaz. jason macdonald had a few good wins early but then he slid off its a shame hes got talent, maybe we will see him down the road

  • fr702 says:

I think that he will be back in the UFC, he has had some good and exciting fights during his time with ZUFFA, it is going to be “odd” to see him in another Org tho.. With a 5~5 record in the UFC he was average, but did have some good fights in there, I just think that he will return, if not he will find a home somewhere soon…

  • Natsdad says:

Man this is typical, Keep Irvin cut MacDonald, yeah that makes sense. Whoever is making these decisions is retarded bottom line. MacDonald is a good solid fighter and can be counted on the perform every time, unlike an afore mentioned fighter. Man it just doesn’t make sense. But I’ll keep an eye out for who gets him, he’ll go to Affliction and sooner or later Affliction will get a roster of well known and liked fighters that WILL be able to compete against UFC and then we’ll all be better for it so I guess, yeah good move, he’ll likely make more money elsewhere anyway!

    • Justin says:

Irvin is 4-4 UFC (with four fights between the first three and last five taking place in other promotions) and hasn’t lost back to back, MacDonald was 5-5 and lost his last two, both in under 2:30, he tapped due to strikes against Gouveia and TKOed by Quarry. Generally speaking the formula for canning a UFC fighter is a two fight losing streak, MacDonald has one, Irvin does not. Do I think MacDonald is a better fighter than Irvin? Maybe so, if Irvin loses his next fight, he might get canned too. If you want to whine and cry about a fighter that should have been let go in place of MacDonald, there are better fighters to choose from that may qualify than James Irvin, like Grove, Stephenson, Liddell (he got retired so….), or Danzig because they meet the lost two straight standard.

In regards to Affliction… maybe you should focus on Strikeforce growing, since by the time Affliction puts on its third ever event (if they manage to do so) Strikeforce will have already had at least it’s third in three months, maybe even fourth in four. Not to mention the wheels for that band wagon never even got attached properly, and they’ve been wobbling like they were going to fall off even before the first event took place.

  • Natsdad says:

Oh and I’ll be waiting to see Grove on the unemployment line as well after Maia chokes him out that will be what 3 of the last 4 ass whoopins.

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

i think the UFC should give fighters like this a last chance fight…

and have it agsint another person who is on the chopping block… it would make for some good fights…

win this or your fired…. im sure that isenough to spark some motivation to get a win…

then after the win they have to win 2 out of 3 fights in order to be removed from the choppin block and given a real contract
