Superfights are always going to be in any combat sports. Dana White put those rumors of a Superfight between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) who just came off a win over Glover Teixeira (22-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) this past Saturday at UFC 172 and UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez (13-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC)who is set to face Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC)at UFC 180 later this year.
Dana White while at a Tuesday press conference announcing the UFC’s first event in Mexico and “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America spoke about the possibility of that superfight:
“Right now, Cain Velasquez has to fight (Fabricio) Werdum,” said White, referring to the headliner between the champ and contender that headlines UFC 180 in Mexico City. “Jon Jones has (Alexander) Gustafsson, possibly (Daniel) Cormier if he wins that fight (against Dan Henderson) – he’s got a lot of guys lined up still.
“The other thing is, Jon Jones is 26 years old. As he continues to get older, he will have a harder and harder time making 205 (pounds), which would eventually probably force him up to heavyweight. It’s not the time for a Cain versus Jon Jones superfight.”
It should also be noted that Jon Jones is set to face Alexander Gustafsson later on this year. A date and location have not been announced for that great Light Heavyweight fight.
If you remember, a few years ago, the big superfight was between Anderson Silva – GSP and or Anderson Silva – Jon Jones. It should be noted that both of those fights never happened. Will this one happen? Let us know in the comment area below.
