Anthony Johnson Reborn Against Phil Davis At UFC 172

This is the first fight back for Anthony Johnson (17–4) in the UFC since he lost to Vitor Belfort at UFC 143 back in January of 2012 via rear naked choke. Since then he has since went on a six fight win streak. This was his first fight back in the UFC and made weight this time.

Davis is circling away from Johnson’s right hand to start the first round. Davis is trying to get inside, but Johnson is not allowing it. Davis attempts to take him down, but Johnson stuffs. Davis misses a wild uppercut and Johnson is trying for a straight right hand which he lands. Davis mixes it up with his strikes, but Johnson lands a few right hands that drops Davis for a moment, but jumps up to his feet. Davis attempts a takedown, but Johnson avoids. Johnson lands a big right hand with 30 seconds left in the round.

Entering the second round Johnson’s hand speed is too much for Davis, Phil keeps trying for the takedown, but nothing. Johnson with a high kick to the head of Davis. Johnson is landing strikes at will halfway through this second round. Davis lands a nice superman punch at 3:30 in the fight. Johnson lands a nice counter uppercut, head kick with a minute a left in the round. Davis attempts a takedown, but Johnson’s takedown defense is so good.

Phil Davis (12–2 (1) was coming into this fight on a three fight winning streak. He beat Wagner Prado in October of 2012 via anaconda choke, Vinny Magalhães in April of last year via unanimous decision and then finally former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in August of last year via unanimous decision.

The third and final round starts, Davis is looking for an answer, but can’t find it at the beginning of the round. Davis goes for a takedown, but stuffed for the sixth time. Davis goes for a seventh takedown, but ends up in a clinch war. Johnson with a big knee to the gut of Davis. Johnson goes for a flying kick, but just misses. Johnson continues to jab his way into victory with a minute and a half left in the fight. Davis goes for an eighth takedown, but blocked.
