Fighting and Entertainment Group announced on Thursday an eight-man open weight “Super Hulk Tournament”, which will begin on May 26th at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan at DREAM 9.

The tournament’s opening round matchups are:

  • Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Bob Sapp
  • Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Jan Nortje
  • Gegard Mousasi vs. Mark Hunt
  • Hong Man Choi vs. Jose Canseco

In other DREAM 9 news, Japanese broadcast partner TBS will air boxer Daisuke Naito’s flyweight title defense against Xiong Zhao Zhong as a lead-in for the event, which should provide the promotion a greater initial audience which they’ll be tasked to retain. With the mixture of legitimate and freakshow matchups booked for the card, it shouldn’t be hard to prevent fans from tuning out.

Yo dude isn’t canseco a black belt in judo? this is kind of silly dude is that the same sokodju that machida submitted?

    • Eric Shapiro says:

Canseco “claims” to be proficient in muay thai, kung fu and taekwondo, though his official combat record is 0-1-1. He was knocked out by Vai Sikahema (a former philadelphia eagle) and drew against Danny Bonaduce in celebrity boxing matches. I can only imagine how he got hooked up with DREAM…

  • GarRule says:

OK, call me ignorant…but is this the Bash-Brother, 40-40 club, author, steroid user, sports car crashing, Jose Canseco? If so…awesome.

  • Justin says:

Wow. Those are some really interesting match-ups, but not necessarily interesting in a good way. Soko against a guy that is 2-5, Canseco (the 44 year old former baseball player, really?!) making his MMA debut against a 1-2 fighter.

Mousasi v. Hunt should be interesting in a good way, considering that Mousasi has talked about moving up to HW and facing Fedor, if he can’t get past Hunt, he doesn’t stand a chance against Fedor.

  • DigYourOwnHole says:

The Japanese like this stuff. I think Canseco fits into their idea of interesting since they like seeing large Western fighters and baseball. What could be better?

  • Dirty says:

Canseco couldn’t even beat Danny Bonaduce …. Choi is gonna KO him within a minute….

  • Jaymz says:

This could be a very short tourney. Can’t see any fight going past the first round.Canseco?Ha Ha.If The Beast doesn’t gas he could win it.Hope this doesn’t affect the Lashley fight cause that’d be fun to watch too.

  • thebearfighter says:

Giant Baseball playing MMA fighter = Japanese Teen girl phenom.

  • bigchris2328 says:

canseco just needs to go away. does this guy have no money left or is he a media whore who needs the attention to stay alive? Im interested in seeing mousasi fight, and agree with justin that he needs to get by hunt to even garner fedor’s interest in a fight. but it also seems that fedor’s handlers are only interested in him fighting fighters they know he can beat recently. they let him fight the overrated timmy, and the one diminsional glass jawed AA. if mousasi looks great, they might pass on that idea, but if he looks crappy then they might push for it.

Sokoudjou to me is a raw fighter with a lot of potential, but I think he was overmatched in his short lived UFC career. I remeber when he first came to the UFC dana was billing him as the next champ, but it didnt work out. I think if he does well in his next 4-5 fights maybe he will get called up to the “big show” again.

  • dbiz says:

This is where Fedor vs Aoki belonged…

  • eldiablo says:

This is awesome…Super Hulk…LOL. Gotta love the Japanese; only they would come up with this. I’m not sure I would consider Minowa a “Super Hulk” though. Either way he’s an exciting fighter who will fight anyone, and I can see him beating the one dimensional Sapp. Moussasi and Hunt will be a real good fight aswell. But what I don’t understand is Canseco. I actually had to google whether this was the same Canseco from MLB. He couldn’t even beat Danny Bodaduci (sp?), what makes him think he’ll be able to hang with 7 foot plus of all Man Choi? The same Choi who brought it to Fedor (Fedor’s face was all mashed up after their fight). Good Lord I want to see this.

  • marvelknight4 says:

    Canseco? dude Canseco?…..?

  • OnlyTrue1 says:

wow has sokoudjou really fallen that far!!??

I wish he would have got with a better camp like X.C. or Greg’s J. camp cause A.T.T. did nothing for him at all.

All that raw talent to now this. wow.

  • wellfire says:

what are the odds for canseco vs choi, i’d put a 100 bucks on canseco if the odds are ridiculously stacked against him. Who the hell came up with the idea to have him fight anyways?

  • seemore says:

i heard a loose rumour that if Canseco can pull out the upset, he’ll fight Madonna in the final….

  • fr702 says:

I absolutely enjoy the “Super Hulk” touney… Hells ya, plus there is an actual fight in there too Mousasi v Hunt… HMC v Canseco forreals? That is soo very awesome there are no words in the english dictionary to descride the awesomeness of this tourney, those crazy Japanese… DREAM.9 is a stacked card plus this just wow thank you FEG

    • dbiz says:

I’m gonna record Dream 9 just for the HMC fight.

      • fr702 says:

hells ya this is going to be F~ing great, I’m going to watch forsure, just have to set aside like 5hours but hey I can take a “sick day” perhaps :P

    • Dr.doom says:

Thats the beauty of Dream , crazy tourney and like you say some good quality fights . A few other sites have been kinda down on them for doing this but who cares? Every fight doesnt need to be the best against the best for it to be cool . Its those amatuer mistakes that lead to wild KO’s I like . Mousasi vs Hunt is a good matchup for the fact that Gegard wants to test the heavier waters and Mark is a mid range guy . Hopefully mousasi hangs around the light heavy area before going fully heavyweight . At 23 he has years to go , rushing is not important at this stage . Jacare vs Miller should be exciting ….. I like Souza in this one .

  • jiujitsuMAN says:

    the real question should be

does canseco get to use his bat against HMC? cause id want a bat against that giant
