Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will not escape the operating table, as he confirmed plans to have elbow surgery Wednesday.
Overeem told MMAFighting.com that he has a pinched nerve in his elbow that will require the operation – the first time he has had surgery in his career.
“Initially, I didn’t realize what it was and thought it would pass,” he said. “I thought (my injured) rib was worse, which it isn’t.
“After 19 years of abuse to my body, I’m proud to now only have my first surgery.”
Overeem (37-13) ended his two-fight losing skid with a decision victory over former UFC champion Frank Mir earlier this year. He was rumored for a return to action vs. Junior dos Santos before news of his rib injury was made public.
Going in – In very good spirits, and aiming for an octagon return as soon as possible!
