MFC Signs Lashley; To Make Debut May 15
PRESS RELEASE: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (April 22, 2009)–One of the most dominating up-and-coming fighters in the world has signed on with the Maximum Fighting Championship.
Former WWE star Bobby “The Dominator” Lashley will step into the MFC ring on Friday, May 15 at MFC 21: Hard Knocks live from the River Cree Resort and Casino and airing live throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico on HDNet Fights.
A chiseled and imposing figure at six-foot-three and 265 pounds, Lashley is the premier heavyweight prospect in all of mixed martial arts.
“Bobby Lashley is a phenomenal athlete and a very impressive fighter who wants to make a big name for himself in mixed martial arts,” noted MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “He is a very exciting prospect and he will get a monumental opportunity to break into the spotlight at MFC 21.”
Lashley (2-0) won his debut fight with a 41-second TKO of Joshua Franklin in December 2008. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jason Guida in March.
At Hard Knocks, Lashley will square off against Mike Cook (7-3) who is trained by legendary mixed martial arts persona Frank Shamrock.
“We are excited to partner with the MFC to feature the network debut of Bobby Lashley on HDNet,” said HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon.
“Bobby’s size, name recognition and collegiate wrestling background make him an unbelievable prospect in the heavyweight division.”
Lashley had a successful amateur background in wrestling, twice winning the NAIA college championship and then winning pair of U.S. Armed Forces titles. The Junction City, Kansas, native propelled his amateur abilities into the professional wrestling ranks with the WWE. During a three-year run, Lashley won three championships with the WWE, appeared on numerous pay-per-view events, and held prestigious spots on the WWE programs RAW, Smackdown!, and ECW.

How is lashley going to pull off this great MMA career since he just signed with TNA wrestling? as fake as pro wrestling may be, the injuries that most get are (accidental) but very real..
Well, you might not have seen that this TNA “signing” or whatever have already been covered, in the thread about Lashley v Sapp.. From what I understand is that The Sun “broke” this story, well they aren’t know for being the most accurate on their percieved details.. anyways welcome to the FrenZy, have a good one………..
Well, TNA is known for offering cash for just a few appearances. I doubt that he signed on to TNA for the long run. He will show up a couple of times, win a match or two and then leave off to continue doing MMA.
“Lashley is the premier heavyweight prospect in all of mixed martial arts.”
Srsly? According to whom? Put his non-MMA record up against Brock’s and it’s no contest, Brock clearly has a better non-MMA record.
I’d love to see these two go at it in a year’s time after they’ve both seasoned a bit more. Talk about a f’ing war.
Where exactly are you quoting that from? It’s certainly not (word for word) in the article?
Third paragraph of the article above.
“A chiseled and imposing figure at six-foot-three and 265 pounds, Lashley is the premier heavyweight prospect in all of mixed martial arts.”
I dont think Brock is really a prospect anymore, he’s co-champ right now, so I would say its reasonable to call Lashley the best prospect, heavyweights in general seem pretty weak and there’s not a lot of promising prospects anyway.
D’oh… my bad, sorry about that. I overlooked it about 5 times.
Also, to address “According to whom?” according to MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich, since this an MFC press release.
Brock is 3-1, he’s still a prospect, despite being co-champ. How many guys have started out 3-1 and then gone into the tank? Plus, he’s still got a steep learning curve.
Given that the HWT divisions ARE as weak as they are, it’d be safe to say that he hasn’t really established himself just yet.
“according to MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich”
Like I said, who??
Justin tried to make someone look silly by making out he was mis-quoting but it back fired. I’ve noticed he likes make out he knows all
lol, Justin has a fan
Samson,
It’s not about making someone look silly, I seriously looked over the article five times before typing that and didn’t see it. I’m about accuracy, not making someone look silly, or making someone else look good, that’s all. I was also am quick to apologize when I mess up so, it is what it is. Anyways, lets not make this thread about me, it should be about the story.
No worries Justin
this is kind of a dumb question, but is lashley still gonna fight sapp? I laughed when I read best hw prospect. that was funny, although thinking about it it could be true, who are the other guys at hw that have under 10 fight experience and look ok? lashley needs to improve his striking before he could ever do damgae, but the guy is a monster physically. he’s 6′3 and 265, thats huge. im 5′10 and 215 and people say im big, I could only imagine what lashley looks like among “regular” people.
Yeah, the fight with Sapp is still on. When we reported the fight with Sapp we also mentioned that Lashley was in negotiations with MFC.
i watched lashely in one of his last WWE events, the next day i saw him walking around the mall… said “hello and thanks for the good show last night”, he replied ” thanks for coming out, have a good one ” hes a nice guy and hes huge…
im 6ft 240lbs, granted im no where near chisled, but lashley looks like a freakin monster… even though he is only a couple inches taller, his stature and the aura he gives off make him look bigger, or makes you feel smaller…
id say he is the top prospect in MMA HW division, but that doesnt mean much… there are plenty of sports that have top prospects that once they make the show(UFC, NHL, NFL etc etc etc) they dont live up to our expectations… so its hard to say how he will do…
i think hes taking the right steps though and working his way up and fighting his way through the ranks… if he continues to improve and develope his skillset it wont be long before he gets into the UFC
i dont think that either lashley or brock will be do well once they get put up against real fighters like frank mir, shane carwin, gabe gonzaga, or junior dos santos. though there are few decent heavyweight fighters, neither of these two have faced any. wow! lashley beat jason guida? that dudes a joke and he couldnt finish him. i hate when big dudes come into mma and think that they can use their sheer size to beat everyone. whatever sells tickets though, i guess..
Brock has been against Mir once already, and is going against him again. And he be Randy Couture… I guess Randy Couture’s not a “real fighter” though….
And lost miserably to Mir, and will again. And not to mention getting his A*S kicked by Randy for 3 rounds up until a “lucky” punch came around. And how old is Randy again? Just wrestling and hammerfists wont get you anywhere in MMA…
I have to say that if you claim that Brock “lost miserably to Mir” the first time, but won by a “‘lucky’ punch” over Couture, I can’t take you very seriously. Brock was dominant in the Mir fight until he made a rookie mistake and got caught in a “lucky” sub. He dominated Herring who isn’t a top 10 contender, but can beat a lot of guys. I certainly wouldn’t say that he was “getting his A*S kicked by Randy for 3 rounds” since it was actually rather even, and the fight ended just over three minutes into the second round. But that’s okay, don’t let the facts get in the way of you saying your piece.
Brock was 106-5 in his NCAA career. A heel hook isn’t a wrestling move so it’s totally a rookie BJJ mistake to fall into.
Do you bash guys like Lidell for being just a “puncher”? Sure, he’s got some ground skills, but you never saw ‘em other than his take-down defense.
Bottom line is that Lesnar has shown improvement every time out. I fully expect him to beat Mir this time out.
i guess that it is what it is then… my point is that it urks me to see really big guys that have no mma discipline (other then wrestling) come in with the “BROCK SMASH” mantality and lay on top of people (Heath Herring fight) and if that doesnt work then try to bulldose them. i suppose that id expect someone with a wrestling background like brock not to get caught in such a “lucky” submission or make a “rookie” mistake. What was his record off the top of your head? I feel like im beating a dead horse with the Randy fight so ill leave it at that.
although brock is still quite raw i think credit should be given where its due. lashley is a perfect example of a big wrestler with no stiking skills and who attempts to lay on people or against them, without ever improving his position. Brock on the other hand looks fast, agile, has decent hands, and besides going for subs always is improving his position and continuously punishes his opponent. What do you expect from the guy an armbar from the wizzar, or pat barry leg kicks, let the guy grow as a fighter then ridicule him.
Curt is my hero!
