Following his first-round knockout of Chuck Liddell on Saturday at UFC 97, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua recently told Tatame that he’d like to rematch Forrest Griffin, who defeated Rua via third-round submission in his September 2007 UFC debut, in his next bout:

“Since the start I was very motivated, and it was important. I’ve trained hard, very focused, more prepared physically and mentally, so I got there ready to show my work and everything I’ve trained”, says Shogun, pleased to introduce himself to the American fans. “Actually, I haven’t had fight well in the UFC, so I knew I needed to show my potential to the American fans, and it all depended on me. I wasn’t easy, but I could show them… I’ll train even more to keep this focus”.

Going to a two weeks trip with his wife to relax, the Brazilian put his UFC future in his manager’s hands, but gives some tips to the matchmaker Joe Silva. “Nobody spoke yet (about my next fight), but my goal is to win the next one. I’m already focused for the next fight. I’ll fight anyone, but a rematch (with Forrest Griffin) would be welcome. He’s a good fighter and it’d be a good fight. I’ll fight anyone, but it’d be cool to fight him again, I’d love it”.

sweet! great fight last time. forrest would win UD! every round like with rashad evan in the first two rounds.

I’m glad Shogun is asking for the rematch. I’d like to see it as well. Forrest is scheduled to fight T. Silva though. Maybe they can let Shogun fight the winner of that fight or the looser of Evans-Machida. Either of these potential fights would be outstanding I believe.

Shogun vs Forrest 2 would be good.Shogun vs Jardine as well.Actually,Forrest vs The Dean 2 would be cool too,but I digress.

Jardine vs Forrest vs Shogun, triple threat, make it happen joe silva. May the best man win.

  • bigchris2328 says:

how about adding a ladder, tables and chairs to that triple threat bearfighter? first one to powerbomb both opponents through the table and use a chair, then do a diving elbow from the top of the ladder wins.

I think it is too early for those two to rematch. There are still a lot of match ups for both fighters to take in the division before they need to cross paths again. Forrest has had more chances to fight the UFC’s roster, but he still can fight John Jones, Machida, Hammil, Vera, O’Brien, and Franklin. All of these guys pose decent threats to any fighter in the 205 division. Rua can have that whole list plus guys like Jardine, Page, and Bonner.

I still say Forrest Wipes his !!!!!

  • bigchris2328 says:

forrest is still a top 5 guy at 205, he shouldnt fight guys that are unproven like jones, hamill or obrien. neither should shogun. forrest has thiago silva, who is very dangerous with his only loss being to machida. I think if forrest wins he gets the loser of evans-machida. shogun should get jardine, or maybe cane. although i think he will destroy cane. I would like to see shogun-houston alexander. if shogun wins his next fight, I think he will get a top 5 contender before the year ends. if shogun has improved his cardio, he will be a monster just like he was in his pride days.

  • Tech-Tition says:

Rankings aside…. i wanna see Shogun vs. Vera

  • fr702 says:

Ofcourse Shogun wants a rematch, it would be a good fight as was the first one, I would go with Forrest but eventually these two will meet again, if Shogun keeps his UFC job ;-)

  • mikewh says:

I felt Forrest had an somewhat easy path to the top facing Rampage and Rua at times when there was definite issues with both guys.
I dont see Forrest lasting against a “Shogun” at the top of his game, i know he can take a beating and has good skills and heart but this guy at the top of his game is in another league all together.
With his surgeries behind him and if he stays healthy and in shape he would finish Forrest by KO. The first fight was great for Forrest but Rua should no have even showed up, he was a fraction of the fighter he was in pride, for good reason though.

    Shogun via second round ringout
