Tonight’s UFC 171 co-main event kept the action in the welterweight division as former Interim UFC champion Carlos Condit took on Tyron Woodley. While the promising fight started strong, an injury to Condit derailed the bout’s momentum and saw Woodley leave with his hand raised.
Woodley Defeats Condit
What started as a great fight ended with an unfortunate injury as former interim champion Carlos Condit was injured in tonight’s fight with Tyron Woodley. That said, Woodley looked very good tonight before the injury and clearly was proving he belonged in the UFC’s welterweight division’s top ten.
Woodley has won three of his four fights in the Octagon, with the lone loss being a frustrating split decision loss to Jake Shields. While the former MIZZOU standout wants the title, the current mess at the top of the welterweight division could provide a lot of opportunities for the up-and-coming welterweight.
It was over when:
This fight was essentially over when Woodley scored a takedown in the second round that injured Condit’s knee. While the finish came moments later, that takedown is what did the damage to Condit’s right knee.
While it seemed possible the winner of this fight would get a title shot, that is unlikely the case given the UFC putting a camera on Nick Diaz multiple times during the weekend. If the UFC goes with Diaz, or the winner of tonight’s main event suffers an injury, it would make a lot of sense for Woodley to take on Rory MacDonald.
