MacDonald Rebounds to Control Maia

It did not look good early for Rory MacDonald as Demian Maia secured mount and controlled the first round. MacDonald bounced back in the second as he showed incredible tenacity and seized control of the fight with his striking in the second round. While Maia would get the fight back to the canvas in the third, MacDonald would battle back to his feet and return to dominating the final frame.

MacDonald managed to put himself back in the title picture by taking a few more risks and returning to his aggressive ways after two lackluster performances. Maia has now dropped two straight for the first time in his MMA career.

It was over when:

While Maia almost stole it in the third, MacDonald managed to get back to his feet and prevent a disappointing loss. The biggest factor in this fight was MacDonald being able to establish the body kick in the second round. So much of grappling is core strength and endurance, so once you hurt a strong grappler’s body, it makes it easier to fend off takedowns. While using body kicks was a risk, it was a great call on MacDonald’s part.

What’s Next?

While it may be tempting to believe that MacDonald will get the winner of Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler, the winner of the Jake Shields and Hector Lombard bout is a very possible scenario as well.
